First Post and Recipe

In the past few weeks since school has started, I have become addicted so several things in my life. The first being the title of this blog, HUMMUS which I am beginning to love more than life itself. The next is blogs ,which for some unknown reason I’ve become so addicted to that I spend my free time scouring the internet for new blogs to subscribe to. In hopes that these two new loves will not take over the rest of my life and cause it to implode, I have decided to take it into my own hands and combine them into my own blog. More than just a garbanzo bean blog, I hope I will be creating an interesting site full of recipes, news on my trek from a joyous British history major to a tired science-hating nursing student in one year, and other exciting tidbits as I continue through my final year of college.

To start this blog off right, I think that it is only fitting that an introductory hummus recipe should be included. I have always loved this creamy savory treat, but as Cedar’s wants $9 for their hummus I hardly ever ate it. It was only this year I realized (with the help of my new food processor) that hummus is a very cheap, very easy to make treat. I make a lot of different varieties (often having three or more in my fridge at one time) but it was only recently when I went down stairs at 2am yelling to my house mates that I was going to make two more kinds of hummus different from the one I made and ate the night before that I realized that I might have a problem. So, here it is, my basic hummus recipe:

Not mine, but doesn’t it make your mouth water…

Whitney’s Classic Hummus

1 15oz can of chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans)

1/4 cup liquid from chickpeas

1/4 cup plain fat-free yogurt

1 tablespoon Tahini (you can find it with the peanut butter in the grocery store)

3 Tablespoons Olive Oil

A large splash of Lemon Juice (I use the bottled stuff)

1 large Clove Garlic

Large pinch of salt

Red or Black pepper to taste

Now this is where it gets exciting! You can add a variety of spices to suit your palate, such as cumin, paprika, coriander, Tabasco sauce and any other spices you like in your pantry! Just combine all these ingredients in your food processor and give it a whirl, the results should be creamy and flavorful. You can then serve with cut up veggies, crackers, pita or tortillas cut up or my personal favorite as of late, tortilla chips.

Happy Eating!!!
